If you ask successful people, to name you what is absolutely necessary to become successful in any area of life, I am sure lots of them would say – Self-awareness.

I know, these days, in personal development space, you hear this word quite often. But, what is it? And even more important question… Why is it so important?

Well, in this article I try to answer these questions to you.

But, first notice that even though self-awareness is a huge topic today, it´s been important for thousands of years.

Aristotle, who lives in the 4th century BC said:

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”

And that´s exactly what´s self-awareness about – knowing yourself. So, let´s start with question, you´re probably asking yourself…

Why Is It So Important?

Let´s say, you want to get a milkshake. You take out shaker but you don´t know how to control it, how it works, what exactly it does. What will happen, then?

Well, in the best case scenario you won´t have a milkshake and in the worst case, you break the shaker.

And the same is you. If your goal is to live a happy, fulfilled life, you have to know yourself.

Because if you don´t you have no idea what makes you happy and what should you do in life.

That´s why it´s absolutely crucial to become self-aware.

Self-awareness is a necessity if you want to live a life full of happiness, fulfillment, and success.

In the following chapters, I am going to explain to you, why.

Be Aware In General

I am 100% sure, you know a person who walks and talk like a walking corpse. A person who looks like being asleep in every situation.

What´s bad about this attitude is that these A.S.P. (Always Sleeping Person) isn´t paying attention to anything.

And what´s sad, this person isn´t really living, but just existing. And that´s not your goal in life. I know that because otherwise, you wouldn´t read this article, you would be asleep.

Do you think this A.S.P. can become Self-aware? I doubt it.

If someone walks with „closed“ eyes, and don´t even notice if a person next to him would steel his wallet, phone, and a bag,  it´s pretty hard (or better said – impossible) to be self-aware.

To become self-aware, you have to becoming aware first. Be aware of what´s going on in your surroundings. Be aware of what you´re doing. Be aware of what other people do.

I assume your goal is to live a fulfilled, happy life. You already know, that´s not possible if you´re not self-aware. And becoming self-aware isn´t possible without becoming aware in general.

Understand Who You Are

Self-awareness is about knowing who you are. And I don´t mean it in some spiritual way. I mean, you should know the answer to these questions:

  • Who do you think you are?
  • Whom do you want to become?

A great example to demonstrate how important is to know who you are is a story about the boy, whose parents were musicians.

From his young age, he was taking singing classes and he learns how to play all possible instruments.

But, what this boy was really interested in was football. And he was pretty good at it. Yet, he had to spend almost all his free time, learning all aspects of music.

Do you think, this boy has a happy life? Do you think, he wakes up every morning full of energy, with a smile on his face? – Well, I wouldn´t bet on it.

When you don´t know who you are and whom you want to become, you don´t have a goal and you end up doing something that doesn´t bring you joy, happiness, and success.

Happiness and fulfillment come from knowing who you are and acting in accordance with this.

So, if you´re deep down convinced you´re an athlete, and you let your friends convince you to drink alcohol 3 days in a week and eating unhealthy all the time, you probably won´t be happy.

Or, if you´re an extroverted person who loves to talk all day long, and your work is to star into the computer for 8 hours straight and not talk at all, again, you probably won´t live a fulfilled life.

Take a moment right now and answer those questions:

  • Who you are?
  • Whom would you like to become?
  • What do you like?
  • What would you like to do?

After answering those questions, you´re gonna understand what makes you happy, fulfilled and possibly, successful in life. And that´s what self-awareness is all about.

What Are Your Strengths And Weaknesses

Peter Drucker in his book – Managing Oneself says:

“You can´t build your life on weakness. You can only build on your strengths.”

I use an example with a musician boy above once again. What if this boy, do not have a talent for music? What if he isn´t enough talented, but yet his parents force him to do music?

Again, do you think this boy would be happy? Of course not. He doesn´t like it and he isn´t good at it.

In this example, it´s primarily the parents’ fault. But, we do this in our lives over and over. We see a movie, where we like an actor, so we say… I am going to be an actor.

We don´t think whether we have what´s necessary. Whether it´s our strength to perform in front of the camera. To learn all the scripts.

And I am sure you already know, this dream probably ends up with failure. The worst part is that this person starts to think…

I am weak, I can´t do anything in life, I am just a disaster.

Then, this person never gonna try something new, because he thinks, it´s gonna end up the same – As a FAILURE.

The truth is, it´s not about him being weak or disaster. It´s because he pursued something, that wasn´t his strength. It´s because he was building his life on his weakness.

And again, remember what Peter Drucker said:

“You can´t build your life on weakness. You can only build on your strengths.”

So, to avoid this, answer these questions for yourself:

  • What am I good at?
  • What am I bad at?

Now, What To Do Next?

After you found out, what are your strengths, the next step is simple:

Double down on your strengths and cut down on your weaknesses.

You can work on your weakness so it won´t be so limiting, but you can´t build your career and your whole life around it.

Building a life on your strengths bring you success, happiness, and fulfillment. And you already know, that´s a goal of becoming self-aware.

Where Do You Wanna Go

I already touched this in previous chapters.

Let´s say you already know, who you are and what are your strengths and weaknesses. The only thing that is missing is your goal. Your vision.

As a Tony Robbins says…

„Progress equals Happiness.“

And it´s 100% true. I bet you know it from your own experience.

Just remember, how you felt if you bench a few pounds more than the last time you were in a gym. Or that you run a mile a few seconds earlier. I guess it is something like that…

I am sure, you were feeling satisfied, proud happy, and you were smiling like a child in a Christmas morning.

To be able to experience these kinds of feelings every single day, you need to have a clear goal, that is in accordance with who you are and with your strengths.

Your vision´s purpose is to give you a direction to aim. If you don´t have a goal, you´re not moving forward. And if you´re not moving forward you stagnate.

If you stagnate, you don´t make progress, which means you aren´t as happy as you could be.

So, answer this question:

  • What do I want to accomplish?

Try to make a goal for every main area of your life. Try to make at least your health, work, relationship, and parenting goal.

But, always create your goals in accordance with your strengths, not weaknesses.

Be Honest With Yourself

Honesty is #1 necessity for becoming self-aware and successful in life. Think about it.

If you are answering questions like… What am I good at? What am I bad at?… and you´re not honest with yourself, what´s the point of answering them at all?

You can become self-aware only if you answer honestly. Not what you would like to answer, not what you would want to answer, but answer the truth.

It´s not a coincidence, that when I was getting through 67 Steps program, which explains the greatest principle for getting a good life from the brightest and most successful people of all time, the first day belongs to 2 principles:

Honesty and Awareness.

From all possible principles of success, happiness, fulfillment, health, wealth and any other area that 67 Steps cover, these 2 were the #1.

That clearly shows, how important is to become Self-aware and Honest with yourself.

So, if you want to dive deeper into this, and learn how (and why) to become aware in life, get into the 67 Steps today.

Bonus: Ask People Around You

In case you honestly answered all the questions above, and you already know…

  • who you are,
  • what are your strengths and weaknesses,
  • and what do you want to accomplish,

you might want to consider to hear another opinion.

Or maybe you´re stuck in some questions. For example, you´re not sure whether a specific skill is developed enough, so it´s your weakness or strength.

In this case, it´s easier to just ask people who know you.

It can be someone from your family. Your friend or partner. Just ask for their opinion on the questions, you have not to clearly answered by yourself.

But, always first do it by yourself and use other people only when you´re not sure or as a correctness test.

Because there is no one who could answer these questions better than you.

People say, when you want to change the world, you need to start from yourself.

The same is when you want to live a fulfilled and happier life. You have to know yourself. That´s what self-awareness is about.

After reading this article, I hope you have a better understanding of why becoming self-aware is necessary for your well-being and mainly, how to do it.

I just want to ask you, to not procrastinate. Answer those questions right now. It won´t take so much time (believe me, you already know these answers).

Lastly, if you want to discover and master more about this (and many others) topics, check out the 67 Steps here.

I hope this article helped you to improve the quality of your life. If it did, please share it with people you want to help to do the same.
